The metamorphism of the butterfly from a caterpillar is one of the wonders of the natural world and for many it represents rebirth or the renewal of life into something much more of value and beauty. It represents beauty and grace while its transformation from a crawling caterpillar into its present state of beauty is representative of the transformation of a woman from a child. Therefore it not only symbolizes beauty, grace and rebirth it also brings forth this idea of a positive change for a better result. These are only a few of the representations of this amazing creature. Many have different opinions on this which varies from person to person depending on their views.

Inspirations that one can derive from butterflies:

One can think of butterflies as delicate beauties. They are colorful and full of beautiful details yet very fragile so that one is reminded of the feminine vulnerability.

Butterflies are free creatures from the moment they hatch out of their cocoons. They are not restricted and so represent freedom for many people.

In Christian and Greek beliefs, the butterflies are a representative of souls, pure and unscathed.

In countries like Japan and China, the butterflies represents the presence of love in the air.

One of the reasons behind the popularity of using the butterflies as designs of so many tattoos is that it can be made on almost anywhere on the woman's body, favourite spots are the ankle, wrist or neck.

Comments: The client first emailed me and asked for a coiled snake in "Calypso Tattoo style". This was a fun work to design and tattoo. The placement is on the calf of the leg. [The client edits books on reptiles.]

Jill Walks On with Her Ink

I spotted Jill in the beginning of November sitting in the New Jersey Transit waiting area at Penn Station.

She has eight tattoos, five are symbols and three are word-based, including this one on her forearm:

The one she shared with us is based on the song lyrics of U2 and their song "Walk On".

The letter G and the date refer to her grandmother and the day she died, March 2, 2010.

The lyrics are "And I know it aches/And your heart it breaks/You can only take so much/Walk on".

Jill said that listening to music got her through a difficult time and this song, in particular, carried and sustained her through the mourning process.

Coincidentally, March 2 marked the anniversary of her meeting the band in 2009.

She chose an Edwardian script and the tattoo was inked by Mike at Fat Kat Tattoos in Keyport, New Jersey.
